About Me.
How I started my jewellery making journey.
I have been creative all my life and my outlet for this has varied dramatically from my own swimwear brand, illustrative prints, and textile design.
I have always wanted a creative business and in 2021 I took my first silversmithing workshop, instantly I was hooked and I knew silversmithing was the route that I wanted to nourish and turn into a business.
I started my Etsy shop in April 2022 under the name Makara Silver Jewellery, and I started selling hammered jewellery. I loved textures and the simple shapes that I used, I wanted to make jewellery that made the wearer feel special and beautiful!
Unfortunately, due to all the hammering of the silver I got repetitive strain injury in my right shoulder! It was so painful and the pain would shoot down the right side of my body, I just had to re-think what I was making as I could not continue this way.
During this time, I completed a Silver Smithing Diploma with the Jewellers Academy, and this allowed me to try a wide range of jewellery making techniques including working with Silver Metal Clay which is a fabulous material which once fired turns into fine silver.
What I loved about it is the versatility and how it takes textures very well. I also found that it did not hurt my shoulder (win) and I could make a lot more jewellery at once so I could send orders much more quickly at busy times like Christmas.
So, my current collection (under the name Laura Sissons Jewellery) is all handmade by me in my Devon workshop with Silver Clay. A celebration of texture and shape with an aim to create affordable real silver jewellery that can be worn every day.
When I am not making, I am spending time with my husband, two children and our sprocker spaniel Honey. We love to walk around our local area and to be outside as much as possible!
I live close to the beautiful Exe Estuary where I take a lot of inspiration from. My daily dog walks allow me to take in the beautiful changes of nature from the tidal waters of the estuary to the birdsong I hear on my walk.
